21 Feb Kenya is Experiencing High Growth eCommerce Adoption

Kenya alongside Nigeria and South Africa is fintech rich, and ready for eCommerce adoption relative to the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa.  Kenya is also the mobile wallet leader and the first to achieve widespread adoption of mobile money with its M-Pesa from Safaricom.

Physical delivery across Africa is a problem as a result of inadequate postoffice services, lack of street addresses and poor road and transport infrastructure.  In spite of this, online retail sales rose from 4% of retail sales worldwide in 2012 to almost 10% in 2017.

Mobile money and eCommerce are good bedmates - one is catalysing the other.  The demand for eCommerce goods and services by Kenyans requires them to be connected and able to pay which the Central Bank supposes is driving mobile money adoption.

Kenya has a good mix of M-Pesa and Card payment capability for eCommerce transacting and 85% of Kenyans have an digital way to pay through a mix of mobile, card and bank payment methods.
