17 Apr Tough times. Do we Need a Payment System for the Hungry?

African Payment Gateway

This protracted stay at home is going to have some nasty consequences for the economy.   On the one hand we are constructing a new reality for ourselves in moving online and appreciating our homes and families, possibly never to return to the concrete jungle and frequenting restaurants like we used to?

On the other hand, based on the fact that almost a third of USA and UK renters are in default,  it seems like most people have less than a month's savings cushion. A natural extension of this line of thought is that people are soon going to be hungry.  Particularly across Africa where many people are on a daily subsistence wage.

I am ok with a “haircut” or “rightsizing” for people who are lucky enough to have to do away with luxuries like insurance, chocolates, makeup and delayed payments on things like student loans and mortgage bonds.  But what I’m not ok with is people going hungry. That is just not cool.

I see this as a role of government to “take from the rich and give to the poor” in the interests of peace for all.  As someone once said “How can I sleep when my neighbour is hungry”. Make sure that citizens at minimum have enough to eat and a level of comfortability.

This brings me to my main point:  Mobile phone penetration is good across Africa so how about a collaboration between government, MNOs (like Vodacom) and voucher issuance companies (like Wicode) to provide government-backed food and essentials vouchers to individuals or families which can be redeemed at shops countrywide?  Randomly timestamped for use on a particular day of the week to support social distancing. Making sure everyone is covered for the basics.
